The Shore Remodel

Scope of Work

Renovation + Addition

Size

6,000 square feet

Throughout the 16 months of this $1.2 million project, the driving question has been: How do we transform a nondescript developer’s spec home into an innovative single residence that will serve the needs of a three-generational family? Throughout the design process, it became clear that 6,000-square-foot home didn’t need to be enlarged substantially, but all the available space would need to be reorganized. One of the rooms that already seemed too large was made even larger. About 1,200 square feet were added to transform an overly massive bedroom suite into an entire apartment – complete with a kitchen, bathroom and a handicap accessible master bedroom. Then, in a second wing of the house, a more usable bedroom suite was developed for the 40-something couple. The downstairs became the living space for the three girls – adding another family room, a bedroom for each teenager, a pool and bath area, a small gym and an art space for Matt’s mother. To enhance the villa-like environment, the space in between the wings – which had been filled with rooms that felt cramped – was opened into a large kitchen and dining room, providing a gathering space for the full extended family.
