The Northeastern Junior College north campus project is a multi-phased LEED Gold certified expansion to NJC’s Applied Technology program. A 32,053 square foot addition is proposed to house the Diesel, Wind, and Agriculture shops and classroom spaces, with administrative functions tying the new program elements together. The 45,499 square foot proposed renovations include an expansion to the Welding program, Electrical program, and associated classroom functions, as well as an expansion to the Diesel and Auto shop programs. Floodplain mitigation efforts required the project to be redesigned. With substantial value engineering to bring the project into budget while incorporating the flood efforts, the project was still able to meet all program requests.
Single sloped shed roofs accent the brick and metal panel facades to create an industrial focused aesthetic to the Applied Tech Campus. Skylights and clerestory fenestration ensure ample daylight throughout the space, while solar shading devices and enhanced glazing protect against glare. A large solar array capable of providing a significant amount of energy used by the addition is installed on the south lawn. A wind turbine is installed inside the wind shop for study and training. Outdoor study areas and outdoor classrooms combined with updated parking and landscaping bring a completed look to the technology campus. VFLA worked with the owner and artist to include The Art in Public places program to put a finishing touch on a unique space for community engagement and students to enjoy.
