Chris Aronson Shares ADU Insights at Affordable Housing Summit

VFLA Architecture + Interiors’ Chris Aronson Shares Insight on Affordable Housing and ADUs at the Northern Colorado Affordable Housing Summit

[LOVELAND, CO] —VFLA Architecture + Interiors Principal Architect Chris Aronson joined regional leaders and housing experts as a featured panelist at the Northern Colorado Affordable Housing Summit held at the Forge Event Center in Loveland, Colorado. Hosted by BizWest Media, the event brought together public and private stakeholders to discuss actionable strategies for addressing affordable housing challenges across the region.

The panel, titled “ADUs & the Missing-Middle Playbook,” focused on innovative housing models and the potential of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to provide flexible, attainable living options for Northern Colorado residents.

When asked about the importance of ADUs to the region, Aronson noted that “we see these things as small but mighty opportunities” and “are a good way to bring gentle density” to local communities. He added, “we are big fans of options to solve the housing crisis in northern Colorado,” referencing the value of aging-in-place design, multi-generational properties, and opportunities for younger professionals to live in desirable areas despite cost-of-living challenges.

Aronson also highlighted key barriers to ADU implementation, sharing that from an architectural standpoint, not having regionally similar requirements and permitting makes it difficult for owners to move forward with building an ADU.

As a public partner of the Regional Housing Initiative, VFLA Architecture + Interiors continues to advocate for regional collaboration and practical, design-driven solutions to housing needs. Aronson noted that time, money, and utilities remain key hurdles for clients—areas where VFLA provides guidance and expertise.

Discussing the importance of standardization and efficiency, Aronson suggested a broader framework for success: “If I had the magic wand, we’d have regional code that would provide certainty, and enough certainty to create and have homebuilders think about pre-fabrication” and “decreasing the time for speed to market.”

From exploring attached versus detached ADU options, Aronson’s perspective reinforced the role of architecture in enabling flexible, inclusive housing solutions that serve both current and future generations.
